Trezor.io/Start | Starting® Up® Your® Device®

A friendly, official step‑by‑step guide to safely unbox, initialize, secure, and start using your Trezor hardware wallet.

Quick checklist (before you begin)

  • Use a clean, offline surface and a private space for setup.
  • Have a pen and the included recovery card or paper ready — never type the seed into a computer or phone.
  • Only download official software from trezor.io/start.
  • Do not share the recovery seed, PIN, or passphrase with anyone.

1. Unboxing & Hardware inspection

Inspect packaging for tamper evidence. Confirm device model (Trezor One / Trezor Model T) and look for the holographic seal or tamper indicators as described in the official documentation.

2. Software: Trezor Suite or Web

  1. Visit trezor.io/start and download Trezor Suite for your OS, or use the recommended web flow.
  2. Verify the download when possible (checksums/signature) — this prevents counterfeit installers.
  3. Install and open Trezor Suite; keep your system's antivirus on but be wary of false positives during device communication prompts.

3. Connect device & Initialize

  1. Connect the Trezor to your computer using the supplied USB cable.
  2. Follow on‑screen instructions in Suite: choose Create new wallet or Recover wallet if migrating.
  3. When creating, the device will generate a recovery seed — write every word in order, on the physical card. Do not store the seed digitally.
Important: Trezor never asks for your recovery seed online. Any request to enter the seed into a website or to share it is a scam.

4. Set a PIN

Choose a PIN you can remember but that others cannot guess. The PIN prevents unauthorized local access and is required every time the device is used.

5. Optional: Passphrase (Advanced)

A passphrase creates a hidden wallet. It strengthens security but adds responsibility — losing the passphrase means losing access. Use only if you understand the implications.

6. Firmware & Device Updates

  1. After initialization, check for firmware updates in Trezor Suite and apply them when prompted. Firmware keeps the device secure and compatible.
  2. Only update firmware via Trezor Suite or official instructions — never from third‑party links.

7. Install coin apps & Add accounts

Within Suite, install coin apps (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum) and add accounts. Trezor supports many coins and tokens; you can add multiple accounts per coin.

8. First transaction (recommended test)

  1. Send a small test amount to your new address to verify setup.
  2. Confirm the address on your Trezor screen — always verify addresses on‑device before receiving funds.

Troubleshooting & Support

  • If Suite doesn't detect your device: reconnect, try another USB port/cable, or restart Suite.
  • On Linux, ensure udev rules are set (follow the official guide).
  • For persistent issues, visit trezor.io/support and collect Suite logs for support staff.

Safety reminders

  • Never enter your recovery seed into a website, app, or chat — it must remain offline.
  • Beware phishing — always check the domain and use bookmarks for trezor.io.
  • Use hardware PIN and consider a passphrase for high‑value storage.
